If H. Rider Haggard--one of the greatest adventure writers of all time--is remembered now, it is for his novels featuring Allan Quatermain, a heroic adventurer whose exploits in Africa form the most important sequence of Haggard's books. Quatermain's adventures are chronicled in such novels as King Solomon's Mines, Allan Quaterman, She, and 11 others. In When the World Shook, Haggard takes his popular formula for Victorian adventure fiction into the contemporary world, with this tale of three modern-day English adventurers who find an ancient god (complete with beautiful daughter) asleep beneath a South Seas volcano.... Written late in his life, When the World Shook is perhaps the most current of all of Haggard's novels; it features many contemporary inventions, from aeroplanes to cameras, as well as Haggard's trademark gripping storytelling and likeable, sympathetic characters. "His tales remain powerfully in the memory..." --The Encyclopedia of Fantasy

That night we slept well and without fear, being quite certain that after their previous experience the Orofenans would make no further attempts upon us. Indeed our only anxiety was for Tommy, whom we could not find when the time came to give him his supper. Bastin, however, seemed to remember having seen him following the Glittering Lady into the cave. This, of course, was possible, as certainly he had taken an enormous fancy to her and sat himself down as close to her as he could on every occasion. He even seemed to like the ancient Oro, and was not afraid to jump up and plant his dirty paws upon that terrific person's gorgeous robe. Moreover Oro liked him, for several times I observed him pat the dog upon the head; as I think I have said, the only human touch that I had perceived about him. So we gave up searching and calling in the hope that he was safe with our supernatural friends.

That carved stone and the marble hand took a great hold of my imagination. What did they mean? How could they have come to the bottom of that hole, unless indeed they were part of some building and its ornaments which had been destroyed in the neighbourhood? The stone of which we had only uncovered a corner seemed far too big to have been carried there from any ship.

In the tradition of She and King Solomon's Mines, H. Rider Haggard's thriller offers up the sleeping god Oro, his beautiful daughter and, of course, high adventure.

I suppose that I, Humphrey Arbuthnot, should begin this history in which Destiny has caused me to play so prominent a part, with some short account of myself and of my circumstances.
