When the Sleeper Wakes Summary

One afternoon, at low water, Mr. Isbister, a young artist lodging at Boscastle, walked from that place to the picturesque cove of Pentargen, desiring to examine the caves there. Halfway down the precipitous path to the Pentargen beach he came suddenly upon a man sitting in an attitude of profound distress beneath a projecting mass of rock. The hands of this man hung limply over his knees, his eyes were red and staring before him, and his face was wet with tears. He glanced round at Isbister's footfall. Both men were disconcerted, Isbister the more so, and, to override the awkwardness of his involuntary pause, he remarked, with an air of mature conviction, that the weather was hot for the time of year. "Very," answered the stranger shortly, hesitated a second, and added in a colourless tone, "I can't sleep."

What a wonderfully complex thing! this simple seeming unity--the self! Who can trace its reintegration as morning after morning we awaken, the flux and confluence of its countless factors intenveaving, rebuilding, the dim first stirrings of the soul, the growth and synthesis of the unconscious to the subconscious, the sub-conscious to dawning consciousness, until at last we recognise ourselves again.

When the Sleeper Wakes is Herbert George Wells classic social commentary in prophetic science fiction form. In 1897 a Victorian gentleman falls asleep in London and cannot be woken for two centuries. Sleeping, he becomes the heir to the world's wealth while the common people suffer misery, social injustice, and poverty. He finally wakes in 2100 to a London filled with technological wonder, injustice, and discontent-and he learns that the common people believe he is destined to save them.

H. G. Wells, the pioneer of science fiction, was born in England on September 21, 1866. He studied science and became a teacher until he decided to become a full time writer at the age of twenty-seven. Wells' first novel was the science fiction The Time Machine, a satirical comment on the English class system which countered the British assumption of inevitable progress. Wells became a prolific author of science fiction, including The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, and The Island of Dr. Moreau. His vivid visions of the future included superhighways, computers, the military use of tanks and airplanes, and the atomic bomb. The prophetic accuracy of his science fiction led to his label as The Man Who Invented Tomorrow .

Passionately concerned about social issues, Wells used science fiction to communicate his concerns and ideas. He also wrote social commentaries like The Holy Terror, a psychological study of modern dictators based on Stalin, Mussolini, and Hitler. His visions of the future included a war-torn twentieth century leading to eventual world peace in the twenty-first century.

Herbert George Wells died in London, England, on August 13, 1946

H. G. Wells is regarded by most literary historians as the founder of the Science Fiction genre.
