The Underground Fields Summary

The Underground Fields concerns a time in the not so distant future when our present social structure (democratic/liberal) no longer exists. However, rather than post-apocalyptic chaos, extreme order is manifest in the formerly democratic United States, embodied by a severe class system segregated by race and gender.

The U.S. is subject to an authoritarian regime wherein African-Americans are dominant in every way - culturally, economically, educationally, politically, socially, and so forth; they are the Master Class (MC). Asian-Americans are permitted few civil rights but, as members of the Intermediary Class (IC), nevertheless have moderately comfortable material lives; although they are little more than indentured servants, they occupy most lower/mid-level professional positions and many service jobs. Some semblance of material comfort is their reward for adequately fulfilling these responsibilities; yet, they have virtually no personal liberties and their futures remain controlled by the whims of the dominant class. Even worse is the condition of Euro- Americans, who are slaves outright, and perform all the menial tasks of the society under the most basic conditions. The Master Class uses an insidious form of mind control, plus extreme, and frequently deadly, physical brutality (as necessary), to maintain its power.

The novel’s main character, Lea Myrrh, is a slave hero, because of the relentless gender segregation of all social classes, has known only women. The few men she has had any intimacy with when she was younger were the Master Class (FieldMasters). Disciplined and sent to the Infirmary, Lea is cared for by an IC nurse, Natalia Pennon, who helps her escape. Lea joins Natalia in the Movement – a Intermediary Class clandestine liberation initiative designed to overturn the Master Class dominance of society.
