The hero, Valentine Smith is a human raised by Martians on Mars. He return to Earth as a young man. The story explores his relationship with Earth culture and how he transformed it. Valentine explores human morality and the meanings of love. He founds his own church, preaching free love and disseminating the psychic talents taught him by the Martians. Ultimately, he confronts the fate reserved for all messiahs. The story has become a cult favorite because of it themes of individual liberty, self-responsibility, sexual freedom and the influence of organized religion on human culture and government.
