The word Dhamma means 'the Teaching' and the portmanteau word dhamma is translated as 'things'. Another key word is 'dukkha'. It is generally translated as 'suffering'. Throughout the book I shall be guided by the English translations of the Pali texts in the books published from the writings of two of the most renowned English monks of our time-both deceased-Venerable Nanavira Thera and Venerable Nanamoli Thera who I had the great fortune to meet and know. They came together to Sri Lanka in 1948 and were ordained by the German High Priest, Venerable Nyanatiloka Maha Thera of the Island Hermitage, Dodanduwa, Galle, Sri Lanka. Dr. Kingsley Heendeniya is well Known for his writtings on Dhamma. He devotes his time entirely to the study of the discourses of the Buddha. Presently retired from the ministry of Health and Postgruaduate Institute of Medicine, Sri Lanka, he was also a consultant in Health Services and Research to agencies such as WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and World Bank. He has travelled widely often leading international study groups. He lives with his wife in Sri Lanka.
