Mestiko: a world on the brink of interstellar space travel,and under covert Federation observation. When a rogue pulsar sweeps through their star system, threatening to destroy all life on their planet, the Federation mounts a desperate effort to protect the planet from annihilation. Under the command of James T. Kirk, the Starship Enterprise, is able to mitigate some of the damage, but the world's surface is still devastated with appalling loss of life.
