A Speck In God's Eye Summary:

Our whole family left for the shanty every Friday night and reluctantly returned home Sunday evening. Our car was old, and the right back door was tied on with rope. But with our food for the weekend, extra clothes, and our dog, Blackie, we headed out. It was the one place that Blackie could go too. He loved the shanty, and he was smart too. Whenever he heard the word cottage or shanty, he was up and waiting at the door ready to go.

Spring Brook cottage was the very essence of authors Bill Bollom and Lola Bollom Schroeder's childhood-not the building itself, but all that it encompassed: cool grass beneath bare feet; icy enamelware pans full of freshly cleaned fish; the gray, cold, choppy waters of the lake during duck-hunting season, and the lingering smell whenever their father popped open a bottle of beer.

Their father referred to the cottage as "The Old Shanty," a name spoken with much reverence, a place where values were shared and the world offered up its bounty. Bill and Lola's father was an outdoorsman par excellence. He never attended church or talked of God, but he was in awe of Mother Nature. The touching collection of stories in A Speck In God's Eye reveals how well-laid foundations support us through life's rough seas.
