Song of the Axe is the epic story of two lovers, Axe Man and Spear Woman, and their progeny. It features tribes of prehistoric men and women who lived thirty thousand years ago, and enchantingly illuminates the origin of myth in historical events.

Axe Man, Spear Woman, and their tribe live by the banks of a wide, glacier-fed river, at the end of an ice age. It is, for them, uncrossable. But then an ice dam far upstream blocks the river, allowing an invading tribe led by an evil chieftain, Ka, to cross into their territory and kidnap Spear Woman before the river comes raging back.
