Overtly serious, this work has an underlying base of dry humor. It is
unusually structured with alternating chapters of action & background
narrative spoken by the major characters. In the Amazon region of Brazil on the eve of WWII, four partners of multi- ethnic, multi-national backgrounds & differing sexualities are involved in a shady scheme to grow rubber plantation-style, a method never before profitable They realize this, but are angling toward a much richer reward. Each of the partners has a major life goal & has come to this place in its pursuit. One partner is Angriff von Hinten, a gay Austrian con-man fleeing the Gestapo after swindling the wife of a high German official. Another is Matt Bryon, an alcoholic American, formerly a major sports star. Both Angriff & Matt have the bulk of their assets tied up in the deal. A third partner is Carlota Flores, an attractive, mixed-race woman of 40, who is the biggest land-owner in Amazonas. She has provided the acreage needed for the scheme. The fourth partner is a silent one, General Vicente Traseira, an immensely powerful figure in Brazil. When the action begins, the deal has been progressing for a few years & Angriff is involved with Astarte, Carlota’s handsome young son, whose sexual attitude is casual. He is cooperative with both sexes---his only mission in earthly life---to provide pleasure. When Angriff is killed by order of Vicente, the surviving partners are surprised to learn that his share has passed to his widow, Circe, a beautiful American expatriate with a somewhat hazy background & a life goal of her own. She arrives to claim her inheritance & tangled relationships soon develop among the partners & other characters including the mechanical genius, Evaniste, a black man, his wife Benedita, who is a priestess in Candomblé, Philetra, an Indian woman who works in Carlota’s kitchen & Povo, an ignorant, dirty Mestizo who runs errands for everyone. In the end, the scheme is successful---making everyone rich or at least secure--- but which, if any, of them reaches “that goal?” |
