Shalom My Love Summary

Where: Jerusalem, Judea, the Sinai and the Red Sea.

When: Today and all the yesterdays.

Background: One of the Dead Sea Scrolls, dictated by Mary Magdalene and transcribed by an Essene monk, disappeared in 1948 at the time of the Qumran excavations. A unique document produced by a direct witness of Christ that has survived until present day, the revelation of its contents may shake Christianity and Islam.

Theme: The Great Mystery.

Plot: A man travels to Jerusalem to acquire the Scroll. This is his first visit to Israel, but wherever he goes, he is assailed by strange memories. And not just memories: one night he goes to a cabaret where a young woman is singing. A woman he knew - defying all logic - nine thousand years ago in Jericho. An impossible meeting. A voyage through the ages to the source of love.

A Scroll and all that it elicits: envy, conspiracy, danger, bravery, stupidity, and cowardice. Not to mention unbelievable memories that infuse mundane reality, and the beating of drums and of hearts. The song of a land joined in blood and light.

Author: PPK was born in Normandy, France and educated at a religious boarding school. By 1968, he is already an established anarchist. During a recital of the Israeli Philharmonic, he falls for a violinist and abruptly quits his studies to seek her out in Tel Aviv. But the journey east is rich with encounters . . . He travels across Turkey and Iran, and an attack of dysentery forces a stay in Afghanistan. Back in Europe, he is obliged to work. He is a pastry chef in Paris, a cod fisherman in Greenland, a seaman in the merchant marine, head waiter on the France ocean liner, a barman in Beirut, a postcard photographer in Senegal, the Bahamas and then Manchester. He travels to America, is a grill cook in Texas, cuts sugar cane in Martinique, works on the docks in Venezuela, is a peddler in Montreal, a butcher in the Yukon, and a cook in Lac-Saint-Jean, where he meets the woman he will eventually marry. Together, they travel across the continent, descend the Amazon on a raft, bet and lose their entire fortune in Las Vegas, live with the Mennonites in Mexico, among the Turahumaras Indians. They have six children, raise goats and horses in northern Lac-Saint-Jean, make wooden toys in British Colombia, and tend herds in Saskatchewan. He is a radiotelephone operator at the Ticouap? Airport, building painter in Quebec City, and an agent at the summer festivals. He is currently helping to prepare the Tri-centennial celebrations in the Windsor-Detroit region, where he is also the creator of the Premier Festival des litt?ratures fran?aises des Am?riques.

Among his books : La promise du Lac, Le Retour de l'Orchid?e, Badland, Maria, Chair d'Am?rique.

PPK states that Shalom, Mon Amour represents a return to his first love and what he defines as follows: "historical-futuristic metaphysical dark suspense genre". In short, evasion, intrigue and adventure in every sense of the word.
