Sev Space Summary

Sev Space is a cartoon parody of the science fiction/fantasy genre by Australian cartoonist John Cook. It spoofs a range of TV shows and movies from Star Trek to Star Wars, from Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter. It specialises in highlighting and nitpicking all the inconsistencies and common errors of the sci-fi genre - why aliens all look like humans with facial makeup, why every creature in the universe breaths air and speaks English, why spaceships go whoosh in the vacuum of space and much more...

Sev Space began as Sev Trek, a spoof of Star Trek. While Cook was publishing more conventional comic strips in newspapers (such as The Pits and Twist), he doodled miscellaneous ideas in his notebook including parodies of his favourite TV shows. One of these cartoons was a parody of Star Trek. When he started the online Sev Wide Web, this gave him an opportunity to publish a range of cartoons. His sci-fi parodies were the most popular, attracting a large number of sci-fi fans. Over the years, it gradually grew to encompass other scifi shows and movies such as Star Wars, X-Files, Stargate, Babylon 5 and many more. Although it didn't quite fit the sci-fi label, Cook also included his other favourite genre (fantasy) including spoofs of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Currently, there are two weekly Sev Space punchline competitions running on the Sev Wide Web. Readers submit thousands of punchlines each week with the funniest punchlines chosen by the readers. Sev Space is published in newsletters across the globe including the Swedish cartoon publication Trasket. A 3D animated form of Sev Trek has been released on video as the 41 minute film "Sev Trek: Pus in Boots".
