Secret Adversary -- Adobe PDF ebook. Agatha Christie’s classic work. |
|
|
| CLASSIC CHRISTIE AT A BARGAIN PRICE Originally published in 1922, the story finds Tuppence and Tommy grappling with various spies in their first adventure. Detective duo Tommy and Tuppence Beresford apply their wits, charms, and adventurous spirits to a menacing mystery that spells certain death for a missing lady at the hands of dangerous unknown foe. Tommy and Tuppence hire themselves out as "willing young adventurers"...but find their lives in danger when their mysterious new employer disappears. While not a very well-known pair, Tuppence and Tommy are rather cute in this complex story, admirably tackling the many different forces that were part of England between the Wars. |

| The two young people greeted each other affectionately, and momentarily blocked the Dover Street Tube exit in doing so. The adjective "old" was misleading. Their united ages would certainly not have totalled forty-five. |

| This is the first in a series of five stories by Agatha Christie highlighting the detective team of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. In this first episode they are not yet married, just good friends who find themselves without jobs after World War I. The story begins with the torpedoing of the Lusitania. Before the ship sinks, a strange passenger gives a young girl, Jane Finn, an important but secret government document. Jane survives the shipwreck, but the stranger dies, the girl is kidnapped, and the document is forgotten until a labor dissension starts in England; if these papers are found in the wrong hands, it would result in catastrophe for the government. Tommy and Tuppence have decided to become professional "Adventure Seekers" as a way of making a living. After becoming involved in a search for Jane Finn, they are contacted by Mr. Carter from Intelligence, Mr. Brown who is a nondescript man manipulating the labor unrest, and Julius P. Hersheimmer who is an American millionaire and cousin to the girl. The detective duo must engage their wits, personal appeal, and enterprising spirit with a mystery that predicts, if all goes wrong, certain death for Jane at the hands of an ominous secret enemy. Please Note: This book has been reformatted to be easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation. The Adobe eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable up to two full copies per year. Both versions are text searchable. |

| IT was 2 p.m. on the afternoon of May 7, 1915. The Lusitania had been struck by two torpedoes in succession and was sinking rapidly, while the boats were being launched with all possible speed. The women and children were being lined up awaiting their turn. Some still clung desperately to husbands and fathers; others clutched their children closely to their breasts. One girl stood alone, slightly apart from the rest. She was quite young, not more than eighteen. She did not seem afraid, and her grave, steadfast eyes looked straight ahead. "I beg your pardon." A man's voice beside her made her start and turn. She had noticed the speaker more than once amongst the first-class passengers. There had been a hint of mystery about him which had appealed to her imagination. He spoke to no one. If anyone spoke to him he was quick to rebuff the overture. Also he had a nervous way of looking over his shoulder with a swift, suspicious glance. |
