The Same Sun Summary

The Same Sun is the story of a man on a downward spiral, banished to the Island, the end of the known universe, on a last chance posting. Carrying in his baggage an all-consuming secret, the man the locals call Barat attempts to serve his penance as quietly as possible resorting, on occasion, to the bottle and to the confines of the local whorehouse for comfort and solace. Immersed by circumstances in a clash of cultures, Barat tries to remain the casual observer. The Island, however, has other plans.

In spite of the best of intentions, Barat’s casual western approach to existence soon antagonizes the local Chief of Police. Concerned with the reports of war and rebellion that drift in from the main island, the Chief fears that Barat’s open disregard for authority, his authority, may tend to encourage similar events in his sphere of influence. After several unsuccessful attempts to turn Barat towards the republics way of thinking, the Chief decides to teach Barat a lesson. The main theme unfolds against the Island’s gentle backdrop told through a series of colourful characters that paint a wonderfully rich and detailed portrait of life on the Island. Lead by Sam, a local Island lad, his impoverished people, the brown skinned invaders from the republic far to the east, and a series of expatriate misfits, The Same Sun depicts the strength of the human spirit as one man struggles to understand his place in the world and maintain what little dignity he has left. In the process, he comes to respect himself and a vanishing culture caught between a traditional past and the steady approach of the modern world.
