Roxy Summary
| Edward Eggleston, the beloved author of "The Hoosier Schoolmaster," published "Roxy" in 1878. According to George Cary Eggleston, Edward's brother and the composer of his memoir, "Roxy" recounts a real event that "had been know to both of us in youth." If so, it tells the story of a woman who desired to be good; attempted to follow the dictates of her society and her religion as to proper thought, faith, and behavior; and who ultimately rose above them to achieve true altruism. "Roxy" is Edward Eggleston's most mature novel. This edition of "Roxy" contains notes for the modern reader including definitions of terms that are not in common use today; biographies of persons prominent in American history and the religious movements of the early 1800s; classical references; and explanations of less obvious regional dialect.
