At about 9 o'clock on the morning, soon after sending her three children off to school, Helen List sat in the kitchen drinking a cup of coffee. She was still in her nightgown and slippers. John came up behind her and put a 9mm German-made Steyr automatic pistol to the side of her head and fired once. She died instantly. The bullet smashed into the opposite wall. Warm blood formed a pool on the tabletop around her head and began to drip onto her slippers. The righteous carnage had begun. He then went up to the third floor where his 85-year-old mother, Alma, in a housedress, was preparing breakfast in her efficiency kitchen. She asked, "What was that noise?" But suicide was out of the question. God would not forgive that. So he vanished for 18 years and started a new life knowing God would forgive him. The List family murders were the most infamous unsolved crime in New Jersey until the story became the oldest 'cold case' broadcast on America's Most Wanted. He was captured a week after the show aired. 'Righteous Carnage' is considered a true crime classic and has been the inspiration and source material for no less than five different television documentaries that are still being repeatedly broadcast.
