| Dr. Richard Saumarez (1764 - 1835), was a surgeon and honorary governor of Magdalen Hospital, London. The theme of Saumarez's New System of Physiology (2 vols 1798; 2nd ed 1799; 3rd ed 1813) can be briefly stated: Life is greater than the sum of its parts. It is rendered possible by something that goes beyond mere chemical and mechanical laws, and when this vital "power" is lacking, "living matter" decomposes, separates, and putrefies. The work, about which there is a certain home-grown if gifted quality, is less a philosophical than a descriptive study of physiology in which vitalism is a premise. In addition to this work, he wrote The Principles of Physiological and Physical Science (1812), the physiological portion of which is included in this text. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who inspired the electronic edition of the present work, had the following to say about Saumarez in a footnote to his use of the word 'Dynamic'. Coleridge met him in July 1812 (CL III 414, 418, 420). C probably mentions him here because he wishes to show that something analogous to the forces and the organic vitalism (the "Dynamic System") associated with Schelling could be arrived at independently by a man who had obviously never read Schelling, not to mention Bruno and B÷hme. SRD This work by Dr. Richard Saumarez is the first medical treatise on Physiology which, according to the OED, is "The science of the normal functions and phenomena of living things. It comprises the two divisions of animal and vegetable physiology; that part of the former which refers specially to the vital functions in man is called human physiology." |
