The Prang Codex Summary:

An episodic set of tales set loosely in the mid twelfth century, in the last remaining independent Saxon monarchy in Plantagenet England (due to a very handy loophole in the law) in which the reigning monarch, King Egbert The Bold, he of the enormous Saxon handlebar moustache, is continually plagued by the arrival at his gates of a shambolic succession of ne'er-do-wells intent on disrupting his regal existence.

The smooth-running of his life is further hampered by the inadequacies of his Chamberlain, Harbinger, who he regards as a broken reed and hardly worth the meagre wages he's paid, and our hero, Wizard Prang, who barely scraped a pass in his Wizarding Diploma from the dubious Postal Academy he "attended". Set in the second year of the reign of Plantagenet monarch Henry II, the tales are liberally peppered with anachronisms, characters from later periods of history, and knowing reference to future events, but then that's comedy for you.

In an independent monarchy the King's word is law, and justice is rough and rapid, often featuring gonads on spikes, racking, being thrown to the dogs, or pelted with rotten fruit. However, perhaps due to the fact that the very existence of his independent kingdom hangs on a legal loophole and the possession of an ancient charter, the one thing that frightens him witless are the lawyers with their writs and injunctions and arcane incantations of sub judice and habeas corpus, and the possession of a piece of legal paperwork does much to blunt his sword.

The Prang Codex is a collection of nineteen episodic tales in over 106,000 words, each sparked by a diary entry penned by Wizard Prang that is slightly economical with the truth, as revealed by the story following.
