| Hal Westerfield, a successful architect with a financial portfolio built up over a twenty-year career, decides to retire in his mid forties and devote himself to the art of sculpture-a means of expression he has been drawn to since his teen years. In the process, he and his family-including his wife and two teen-aged children-will move from the Bay Area to the California foothills. After viewing a number of properties, he comes upon one, which although in need of some refurbishing, offers a comfortable home and an outbuilding that with some work will serve adequately as a studio. Also included in the six acre parcel is a giant oak-thought to be at least three centuries old-that from the beginning casts an attraction over him that is both compelling and mysterious. During the move-in and for some days afterwards, everything appears to proceed in a conventional manner, until the evening Hal Westerfield has a few drinks and decides to take a closer look at the oak under a night sky. What he encounters then appears to arise out of an outer worldly dimension, one he desperately wants to break free of, if only the tree will release him from its grip before subjecting him to a series of events more terrifying than his worst nightmare. |
