Mind Your Own Business: A Maverick's Guide to Business, Leadership and Life Summary

The character of today's business leaders is under attack. The economy is soft and reform of corporate governance is on the national agenda. It might be said that we are in need of direction and inspiration--and the world may find both in Sidney Harman. As Executive Chairman and founder of Harman International, Harman has guided his 50 year old company to a place of distinction, known not only for its superior product, but its consistently profitable performance. In his new book, Mind Your Own Business, Harman offers up his unorthodox leadership advice, wisdom acquired both in his 60 years of doing business and his 84 years of living life. Tom Peters calls it a "wise book"; Warren Bennis insists it should be "required reading"; Thomas Foley describes it as both "guide and inspiration"; and Norman Lear thinks it's just plain "terrific." Harman founded Harman Kardon, makers of fine audio equipment, in 1953. While running the company, he served as full time President of Friends World College, an experimental Quaker college. In 1976, he accepted Jimmy Carter's invitation to serve as Deputy Secretary of Commerce. In all three roles--as executive, educator and Cabinet member--Harman followed his own moral code in making decisions. Mind Your Own Business is not a one-size-fits-all approach to leadership, but rather an informed look at letting character create an individual vision for leading a company. From mergers to middle management, branding to negotiation, Harman learned to lead by listening to his heart. Above all, he believes the leader's job is to inspire others. Harman has chosen to do so with bottom-up leadership, an executive team that he likens to a jazz quartet which learns from one another, a strong voice for middle managers and in-house classrooms to educate all levels of employees in basic math, health and music.
