Mastering the People Game Summary

This work is advanced management engineering, an application that goes beyond what a manager can personally do to gain performance. It is management of the labor force from which we draw workers. This work addresses the challenge of decades-long forces that create increasing hostility in the workforce, and encourage interference in the profitable operation of business through benefits for organized labor and through legal mandates. The "how" is direct. Step one is leveling the playing field between employment, contracting, and other means for gaining workers. This involves arranging employment-like benefits for these other ways of gaining performance (leave, insurance, retirement, etc.). In regular contract relations, modern interference with profit can be legally actionable. Step two is to put these alternative approaches into practice right along side employment, putting contract workers in direct competition with employees for work assignments and pay. Attempts to exploit employment for social or political gain will tip the balance in favor of arranging labor through regular contracts. The second "how" is internal, it requires action by managers who determine to gain performance through their subordinate organizations, and who will actively manage over personnel efforts as part of their implementation. On another level, this describes how to bring this new labor force into existence. It addresses how to harness the external environment through supporting entrepreneurs as they earn through their initiatives.
