Il tenait son droit de sa m?re B?atrix, fille a?n?e de Malcolm: la cadette, Doada, ?tait m?re de Macbeth, qui se trouvait ainsi cousin-germain de Duncan. Le p?re de Macbeth ?tait Finleg, thane de Glamis, d?sign? sous le nom de Sinell dans la trag?die et dans la chronique de Hollinshed, d'apr?s l'autorit? d'Hector Bo?ce, ? qui a ?t? emprunt? le r?cit des ?v?nements concernant Duncan et Macbeth. Comme Shakspeare a suivi de point en point la chronique de Hollinshed, les faits contenus dans cette chronique sont n?cessaires ? rappeler; ils ont d'ailleurs en eux-m?mes un int?r?t v?ritable.

Macbeth s'?tait rendu c?l?bre par son courage, et on l'e?t jug? parfaitement digne de r?gner s'il n'e?t ?t? ½de sa nature,? dit la chronique, ½quelque peu cruel.? Duncan, au contraire, prince peu guerrier, poussait jusqu'? l'exc?s la douceur et la bont?; en sorte que si l'on e?t pu fondre le caract?re des deux cousins et les temp?rer l'un par l'autre, on aurait eu, dit la chronique. ½un digne roi et un excellent capitaine.?

Apr?s quelques ann?es d'un r?gne paisible, la faiblesse de Duncan ayant encourag? les malfaiteurs, Banquo, thane de Lochaber, charg? de recueillir les revenus du roi, se vit forc? de punir un peu s?v?rement (somewhat sharpelie) quelques-uns des plus coupables, ce qui occasionna une r?volte. Banquo, d?pouill? de tout l'argent qu'il avait re?u, faillit perdre la vie, et ne s'?chappa qu'avec peine et couvert de blessures. Aussit?t qu'elles lui permirent de se rendre ? la cour, il alla porter plainte ? Duncan et il d?termina enfin celui-ci ? faire sommer les coupables de compara?tre; mais ils tu?rent le sergent d'armes qu'on leur avait envoy? et se pr?par?rent ? la d?fense, excit?s par Macdowald, le plus consid?r? d'entre eux, qui, r?unissant autour de lui ses parents et ses amis, leur repr?senta Duncan comme un l?che au coeur faible (taint hearted milksop), plus propre ? gouverner des moines qu'? r?gner sur une nation aussi guerri?re que les ?cossais. La r?volte s'?tendit particuli?rement sur les ?les de l'ouest, d'o? une foule de guerriers vinrent dans le Lochaber se ranger autour de Macdowald; l'espoir du butin attira aussi d'Irlande un grand nombre de Kernes et de Gallouglasses, pr?ts ? suivre Macdowald partout o? il voudrait les conduire. Au moyen de ces renforts, Macdowald battit les troupes que le roi avait envoy?es ? sa rencontre, prit leur chef Malcolm, et, apr?s la bataille, lui fit trancher la t?te.
