| This work is a send-up of ethnic stereotypes, mob mythology and romantic comedy. Character & dialogue driven, it takes place in northern NJ where the 3 main Caucasian ethnicities are Jewish, Italian & Irish. Pretty, dark, bright, little Delia Haimish, age 15, is from the poor-relation branch of an otherwise well-off Jewish family. Uncle Jake, (no living children) inherited the family junkyard. Aunt Faye is married to Henry, an arrogant, womanizing bookmaker (hated by Jake & everybody else). They have three blonde, leggy, teen daughters who like to flaunt their wealth at Delia, who vows to get money of her own. When Delia’s father dies, she, brother Arnie (computer genius) & Jewish-mother Helen give up their modest home & move to a flat in the worst part of Newark. Delia gets a scholarship to Princeton, majors in Business & upon graduation agrees to an arrangement with Uncle Henry (not a blood relation). She will work at his horsebook for a good under-the-table salary + a rent-free lux apt. & tolerate his “visits.” Later, handsome Gino Lombardi, who has messed up his status with the mob in spite of his uncle’s high position in it, goes to work for Henry as a gofer. Gino & Delia fall in love & together establish an elaborate past-post scheme, Henry the intended victim. Their accomplice & front man is Jack O’Malley, an Irish labor leader, who also wouldn’t mind getting a piece of Henry’s fortune. The scheme goes forward in spite of a general suspicion among all involved including the mob which gets wind of it. The suspicions are well-founded as everyone is lying to everyone else. The scheme does succeed, but too well. There will be no collection, but Delia does come into dead Henry’s money in the end. She & Gino retire to a villa in Majorca, Delia happy, Gino biting his lip at her dominance. |
