This JCAHO Field Study was written by Susan Sovine, Ph.D. It was a 6-week project assignment required for a MBA Program. The study took place at the office of a home healthcare facility located in Southern California. This facility is JCAHO accredited and is constantly striving to upgrade all aspects of its operations. The entire documentation flow was analyzed during this assignment to assure the facility was in compliance with recent revisions to JCAHO regulations. Under the direction of a preceptor, the objectives of the assignment were: (1) to be exposed to a real-world healthcare organization’s daily operations, (2) to become acquainted with applicable JCAHO regulations, (3) to review documentation of previous JCAHO surveys, and (4) to make recommendations for the organization’s improvement to assure meeting JCAHO standards at the next unannounced survey. The end result was the creation of a Previous Shift’s Documentation Audit Form designed to shorten nurses’ time required to complete this task. The Plan, Do, Check, and Act (PDCA) problem-solving method was used for this assignment. |
