From the Preface: ... The notes that would become the foundation for this book were written over a period of four or five years, stretching from my time in college through my stay in a psychiatric hospital to some time involuntarily spent on the road. I’m not certain what my motivations were for much of this writing, whether it was to preserve my failing memory or whether it was a compulsive holdover from what began to feel more and more like a previous life. Upon checking into the hospital it’s said I was accompanied only by my ubiquitous bookbag filled with mostly empty notebooks and a single ballpoint pen. I have to say it sounds like me, though even now I still have little to no recollection of it. After some time I’d forgotten what it was that I’d checked myself in for, or even whether I’d been committed voluntarily or held against my will. Regardless of how they made their way into my possession, I do know that while institutionalized I kept a collection of notebooks in which I wrote out the errors of my life. Or as much of them as I was able to remember, discern or found value in relaying. As it would turn out, these notebooks would be my only recollections of, or connections to, those twenty-some preceding years. I kept the journal comprised of nine notebooks laid flat like a quilt, hidden beneath my mattress. The book you now hold is not exactly that journal, though most of the material was extracted from those pages. This book is a collage woven from diary passages and conversations, poems and memoirs jotted down during my hospital stay and the months prior to it, into something I hope is slightly more coherent and readable than the original artifact. |
