Hoaxbreaker Summary
| A twisted genius plays Satan in an attempt to ruin his enemy's reputation and destroy his sanity. This is opposed, incognito, by the world's greatest hoax breaker in a black magic gamut of horror that unexpectedly runs into the real thing--a demon who is behind the curse of Thorncliff Manor. The genius has gone too far. As the last Grand Master of old-world demonology, he has become obsessed by the demon he sought to invoke. Seeming predictability of the story subtly unfolds the unexpected, the non-cliche, and the surprisingly unpredictable. One is finally ensnared in a vicious web of murderous evil that doesn't fool around. But then neither does the hero, because of one characteristic that evil cannot abide--a penchant for facing facts instead of fear. Greg Bauer is the handsome hoax breaker, with a foreign charisma that suggests the tantalizingly concealed. Beatrice Benedict, endowed with a mystical beauty, has a deep psychological problem involving an unconscious "death wish"--the compulsion to return to Thorncliff Manor after the mysterious disappearance of a family member. Ella Connor and Rocky Place are her would-be protectors, supplying the earthy element and occasional comedy relief. Bea's mysterious uncle, Dr. Karl Hauser, is a stubborn German and medical researcher in psychopharmacology, leading to demonology that causes his wife, Catherine, to be (apparently) stolen by Satan. Then Beatrice also. The hoax breaker, Greg Bauer, leads the rescue into a "Hell" created by means of ingenious illusion--only to encounter its demonic creator. (Of course our hoax breaker would tell you there is nothing supernatural, and that there really wasn't a demon--but that is left for the reader to decide!) |
