Golden Horse – The Mountains. Part I of Golden Horse follows the early years of a wild Kaimanawa pony growing up in the mountains, and the friendships and adventures she has there. An unusual friendship with an abandoned baby deer, and a terrible fight with another stallion mark her first years. The herds of wild horses grow in number, feed becomes scarce in the long hard winters and eventually the wild horses have to be culled. Golden-Moon is one of those terrified horses captured in a wild, thundering race down the tussock valleys, losing her friends and family. Those that are captured face an uncertain future. Fortunately she finds a buyer and has to begin a new life among men. This first owner, a teacher, knows nothing of horses and does not know how to form a bond with the frightened wild pony so she is very lonely. The children at the small country school next door to her paddock are instructed to keep well away from the wild horse. But the two youngest girls disobey their teacher and sneak through a hole in the fence to take a shortcut home. The tale is told from the horse's point of view so the readers develop an empathy with the pony and develop an understanding of her fears and the reasons for her reactions to the two strange little creatures that have entered her green field. Part II follows her farm horse years and her many adventures with the children growing up on a small farm in New Zealand. Part III finds her family now living in the town. Will she become a pony-club horse? What adventures lie ahead. |
