God's Project: People Summary

For some two millennia, Christians viewed God's Project, People, in the light of the Genesis account of the creation of the human race and of its banishment from the Garden of Eden. As a result of Adam's disobedience in eating of the fruit of Knowledge, our efforts and God's Will were deemed to be the healing of that first breach with God and the restoration of the harmony which had once existed. The discoveries of Darwin and subsequent scientists revealed a different story. The human race had in fact evolved over millions of years. Its history has been that of slow development from being a beast, acting by instinct, to a new phenomenon, endowed with free will. Though still greatly influenced by our genes, health, culture and upbringing, we can ponder and reflect and voluntarily determine our actions. We are thus not involved in an attempt to recover a state of harmony which never existed. We are engaged on God's on-going venture to create beings in harmony and at one with Him. Christ's Passion on the cross was not an act of atonement for sin, but the creation of the means to achieve that at-onement with God, for which we were designed. It is from that 21st century perspective that this book views God's Project, People.
