Gender, Ethnicity and Place: Women and Identities in Guyana Summary

This work explores ways in which gendered and racialised identities are produced, sustained and transformed, stressing the links of contemporary identities with place and history. Using the case of Afro-Guyanese and Indo-Guyanese women, Linda Peake and Alissa Trotz reveal how divided groups conceptions of themselves and each other are shaped by: · historical views of women's identities · geographical location · gendered implications of development strategy and legislation · paid work · domesticity, sexuality and kinship · relations with other women · perceptions of difference · domestic and international migration · globalization of labour, capital, values and ideas The authors then discuss ways in which a gendered identity can create common ground which crosses ethnic divides and explore the potential for women of different races to work together, creating new development programmes with feminist aims. This work offers a unique analytical framework for studies of women and development. It will be of value to researchers in Development Studies, Women's Studies, Sociology, Social Anthropology and Caribbean Studies.
