| This work explores ways in which gendered and racialised identities are produced, sustained and transformed, stressing the links of contemporary identities with place and history. Using the case of Afro-Guyanese and Indo-Guyanese women, Linda Peake and Alissa Trotz reveal how divided groups conceptions of themselves and each other are shaped by: · historical views of women's identities · geographical location · gendered implications of development strategy and legislation · paid work · domesticity, sexuality and kinship · relations with other women · perceptions of difference · domestic and international migration · globalization of labour, capital, values and ideas The authors then discuss ways in which a gendered identity can create common ground which crosses ethnic divides and explore the potential for women of different races to work together, creating new development programmes with feminist aims.
