The Fountains of Paradise In Extra Large Print Summary

It’s the 22nd century, and Clarke describes the construction of a space elevator - a giant structure connecting the Earth on the equator with a satellite in geostationary orbit. It is used to lift payloads to orbit without using rockets or shuttles. The project is made possible by using a hyperfilament which is able to sustain it’s own tremendous weight and make possible elevators that travel on the cable. Subplots include colonization of the solar system and extraterrestrial contact. There are historical references to ancient East Asian cultures.
