FLOWERS IN THE DUMPSTER Summary

Macbeth meets Blithe Spirit in this stylized, satiric, black farce. A couple, Peter & Patsy Paltry, pretentious but shabby aging boomers, has been trapped managing a women’s used clothing shop in a dreary slum. They hang-in only because they hope to inherit the shop, the building & a major fortune when their benefactor, Duncan, dies. But the old man meets young Penny, who is, unknown to him, a hooker. He is about to adopt the woman & her child Polly, meaning the couple will inherit little or nothing. Goaded by his stronger wife, Peter murders Penny after 1st sampling her wares, but fails to kill Polly as ordered. He indirectly causes Patsy’s death & is later haunted by the spirits of both women. Duncan insists that Peter bring up Polly & the crooked lawyer Pariah forces him to accept Mrs. Peripat, an aged, gentle bag- lady as a live-in baby-sitter. Upon Duncan’s eventual death, Pariah reveals he has proof Peter killed Penny & assumes control of the estate even though Peter is the presumptive trustee until Polly reaches 18 when she will inherit. Peter is haunted continuously through the years until justice catches up with him. Things get complicated & look dark for the now mature Polly, but Mrs. P. shows her a way out. (Based loosely on an actual murder-revenge case of which the author knew the principals.)
