Fifth Field Summary
| Ireland long has been personified as the woman, Kathleen ni Houlihan. The concept of the Land as a woman has roots as far back as the early Celts. In more recent times the concept was reinforced in song and poetry by the necessity to avoid direct reference to the country during the time of occupation. Kathleen is, of course, the goddess herself, always young, always old, and always beautiful. She is the mother who gives birth, the lover who inspires and bewitches, and the old woman who tends to final business. In this tradition, Kathleen has four green fields, the provinces of Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster. This is a tale of her fifth field, distant, diverse, and planted in foreign lands, faraway places, but certainly green and populated by her children. The ancient Irish knew that off shore, beyond the horizon, was another Celtic ground, a Tir nan Og, the land of heroes.
