The Family and the School: A Joint Systems Approach to Problems with Children Summary

The first edition of The Family and the School, published in 1985, drew together for the first time developments in the applications of systems theory to family therapy and consultation to schools. It was widely accepted as a seminal text in the field, its special value being the way in which it considered how the family and the school systems overlap and interact with each other. This second edition is fully revised and updated. It now contains more material specifically related to work with schools, and the book has been entirely recast to reflect the major changes in society, in legislation and in the nature of the interaction between families and the education system in general, which have taken place in the last decade. The distinguished contributors all have links with the Child and Family department of the Tavistock Clinic and include educational and clinical psychologists working with schools and hospitals, family therapists, child and family psychiatrists and teachers.
