William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863), author of the now infamous Book of Snobs, was a caricaturist. Around 1834 he moved to Paris to study art and later illustrated his writing. Previous to this he had dropped out of Cambridge after acquiring a hefty gambling debt. He had a successful writing career, contributing to Punch Magazine and publishing the acclaimed Vanity Fair.
