English Men of Letters: Locke Summary:

British philosopher John Locke set the Enlightenment into motion with his radical ideas about the importance experience plays in reason. He shaped the world through pragmatism, and particularly influenced Berkeley and Hume. Having studied medicine at Oxford, he was even physician to the future Earl of Shaftesbury III, though he is more commonly known for his controversial Two Treatises of Government, which contested the divine right of the monarchy.
