English Men of Letters: Gibbon Summary:

Edward Gibbon (1737-1794), best known for The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, is considered the seminal historian of the Enlightenment. Born to a wealthy family in South London, Gibbon wrote his first works in French. He was expelled from college in Oxford for becoming Roman Catholic, but after boarding with a demanding Calvinist pastor in Switzerland, turned back to Anglicanism. From there he joined the militia and then went on to have a successful writing career.
