English Men of Letters: Dryden Summary:

John Dryden pushed rhyming couplets to new heights in satires. He was born August 9, 1631, in Northamptonshire, England, to a family with ties to the Parliamentary party. As a king’s scholar he studied at Westminster where he published his first work, an elegy. Afterward he received a scholarship to study at Trinity College in Cambridge and graduated with a B.A. in 1653-4. His first important work is considered to be the “Heroic Stanzas,” about Oliver Cromwell. Read more about him in this fascinating biography.
