“At age 5, I started school in the Catholic school system in a small town in
Southern NSW. Although I was a quiet and co-operative student, from the
beginning, the teachers commented that I would need to apply myself with
reading and phonic sounds to reach a satisfactory standard. My reading and
spelling progressed slowly and I would get sounds around the wrong way when
writing them; I would also reverse numbers. At this time however, I never
felt isolated or out of place. This may be because I have always lived in a
stable family environment. I did begin to notice from about grade 1 that I was
slower than the other kids and started to believe that I was not as
intelligent as everyone else was.” This is the story of my life as a boy growing up with dyslexia. It explains how I felt, what I thought and how it affected my life. It also has a section from a mother’s point of view, outlining her frustrations at the school system and worry seeing her once happy child grow into a frustrated adolescent and teenager. This book is for anyone experiencing, or living with a dyslexic who wants an understanding of what goes through a young dyslexics mind, and how, ultimately, one can learn to overcome their disabilities and lead a happy and fulfilling life. About the Author: From the start of school, Brendan Clark suffered from severe dyslexia that went undiagnosed until grade 4. As a result Brendan battled through severe depression and anxiety which resulted in him leaving school at the age of 14. Brendan slowly learned to improve his life, buying his first house at the age of 19. This is Brendan's story, which he wrote for two reasons. Firstly to share his story and help other people with similar experiences, and secondly as a way of helping close out the pain caused by his dyslexia. |
