Is that what caused him to do what he did next? That’s what the police chief tells her the next day, he was missing his kids when he reaches under the mattress for the gun. But it’s not the children. It’s the old man, the night the old man came home drunk again, the red wagon again, and Ralph now thirteen, now beaten and beaten again, welts on the backside to school, welts across the cheek to stay home from school. His brother now fifteen, his mother now much older, his sister eight always on the stairs again, her thumb in her mouth, and all of them but her pulling the red wagon up the road to the front porch.
