Many years ago, the elderly sisters Emily and Judith Pancoast received a dollhouse from their brother for Christmas. It was an exact replica, even down to the carriage house, of their Victorian home in the little village of Seacrest. The ladies were delighted with the present and have taken great care to keep all the decor up to date. They have even made tiny dolls to represent each member of the family, and whenever there is an addition -- a new husband or a new baby -- the arrival is added to the household.

Every year on Thanksgiving the entire family gathers at the sister' home for the holiday dinner. But this year, when Emily Pancoast goes to make a last-minute check of the dollhouse table, set with miniature replicas of the heirloom service the sisters use, she discovers that the table is in total disarray, and the doll representing their niece, Pamela, is facedown in her dessert plate. The ladies agree that the havoc must have been caused by mice, and they quickly set things right. But at the end of the meal the real Pamela is found dead at the real dining room table.

Dr. Andrew Fenimore has been caring for the Pancoast sisters for a number of years. The good and slightly old-fashioned physician, and amateur sleuth, has acquired a reputation for good detection, and the sisters now turn to him for help in the family tragedy. He accepts the task but quickly finds that he is up against more than he, or Emily and Judith, has bargained for.
