The Dhammapada Summary

The Dhammapada is a collection of sayings that illustrate the Buddhist 'dhamma', or way of virtue. Written in the 3rd century B.C., it is organised into 26 chapters, each consisting of a group of stanzas. Through them we discover the path along which all Buddhists must walk on their struggle towards perfection and the goal of Nirv?na. The idea of representing life as a path of duty or virtue leading to deliverance is an integral part of Buddhism. The four great truths of that religion consist in the recognition of the following principles: 1. that there is suffering; 2. that there is a cause of that suffering; 3. that such cause can be removed; 4. that there is a way of deliverance: the doctrine of Buddha. This is the way of the asht?nga-m?rga, the eight-fold way, taught by Buddha. It is the path to Nirv?na, and in the glowing text of this little book we still hear the voice of Buddha, across the centuries, speaking to us of the way of virtue, and of the life of love and eternity.

This volume contains 463 sayings of the Buddha arranged in 26 categories which demonstrate a plan to extinguish the causes of pain and suffering which are selfishness and self-centeredness. The book declares this process is lengthy and difficult, but with meditation and right thinking it can be accomplished. Please Note: This book is easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation. The Adobe eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable up to two full copies per year. Both versions are text searchable.
