The sudden and dramatic democratization of Eastern Europe during 1989-1990 was something that had not been predicted by political scientists. This book is a response to those events in that it seeks to provide some theoretical explanations for the process of democratization in Eastern Europe and compare that experience with the democratic transitions experienced in other parts of the world. " Democratization in Eastern Europe" examines the causal factors of democratization. It analyzes the processes from a domestic perspective of the countries concerned and includes an investigation of long-term structural changes. It focuses on the struggle of social and political movements against authoritarian political structures and on the emergence of multi-party systems and new institutional and electoral arrangements. It examines how democratization was, in part, determined by external factors such as the role of Gorbachev's reforms in the Soviet Union as well as the appeal of Western social, political and economic systems. |
