The Cruise of the Snark Summary

No, adventure is not dead, and in spite of the steam engine and of Thomas Cook and Son. When the announcement of the contemplated voyage of the Snark was made, young men of "roving disposition" proved to be legion, and young women as well--to say nothing of the elderly men and women who volunteered for the voyage.

Inspired by Slocum's "Sailing Around the World Alone," London built a 45' schooner called the Snark, with the intent of sailing the world with his wife and crew. This book is always insightful, and often hilarious.

The Cruise of the Snark

It began in the swimming pool at Glen Ellen. Between swims it was our wont to come out and lie in the sand and let our skins breathe the warm air and soak in the sunshine. Roscoe was a yachtsman. I had followed the sea a bit. It was inevitable that we should talk about boats. We talked about small boats, and the seaworthiness of small boats. We instanced Captain Slocum and his three years' voyage around the world in the Spray. We asserted that we were not afraid to go around the world in a small boat, say forty feet long. We asserted furthermore that we would like to do it. We asserted finally that there was nothing in this world we'd like better than a chance to do it. "Let us do it," we said . . . in fun.

Author Jack London sails the South Pacific and visits the Islands of Teipe(Typpe), Tahiti, Samoa, Hawaii, and Bora Bora.
Join Jack for his adventures at sea and on land, among the cannibals.

The author has narrated a two-year voyage aboard a ship. It is the account of wild sea storms, navigational doubts and sea-illnesses combined with the natural beauty. The amalgamation of terror and fascination renders beauty to the narrative. A book that testifies man’s indefatigable courage and spirit.

London's own account of a far-reaching voyage?from daily life on the boat to stories of native encounters and marauder assaults Inspired by the examples of his heroes Herman Melville, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Joshua Slocum, Jack London determined to sail around the world. In April 1907 he sailed from San Francisco in the forty-five-foot ketch Snark, with his wife, Charmian, a skeleton crew, and his writing to keep him company. Beset by seasickness and tropical disease, London wrote incessantly?not only his major autobiographical novel Martin Eden and numerous short stories, but also a series of sketches recording the voyage itself. These entertaining pieces, collected together into the book he called The Cruise of the Snark, reveal London?s indefatigable spirit and love of adventure at sea and among the Pacific islands. * Includes introduction and notes, as well as London's delightful sea pieces ""That Dead Men Rise Up Never"" and The Joy of Small-Boat Sailing"".

In April 1907 Jack London set out to sail around the world in the 45-foot ship The Snark, accompanied by his wife and a small crew. Although suffering from seasickness and tropical disease, London wrote prolifically, including a series of entertaining sketches of the voyage itself. These were later collected as The Cruise of the Snark, a remarkable record of adventure and love among the islands of the South Pacific.
