Coping With The Cubs Summary

Coping With The Cubs: A Lifetime Of Depression, A Year Of Hope

Why does a guy who has battled debilitating depression all his life become a fan of the least successful pro sports team in the world?

Early in his life, Michael G. Glab learned to erect a wall of optimism to ward off the despair. By the time he became an adult, his ability to find promise in the most unpromising situations armored Glab against the yearly heartbreaks of his beloved baseball team.

Rooting for the Chicago Cubs takes patience, hard work, and a certain sense of self-delusion. Glab’s lifelong struggle against depression and his never- ending dream that the Cubs will one day win a World Series have become intertwined.

When Glab leaves Chicago for Louisville, Kentucky, he follows the Cubs from afar, keeping the faith and battling his demons, even though the Cubs were coming off one of their worst seasons in history. Depending on real-time Internet accounts of the games, TV and radio broadcasts, and quoting from baseball beat writers, Glab recreates the 2007 Chicago Cubs’ season.

By October, Glab discovers that fighting depression and cheering for the Cubs both depend on the most valuable asset a person can have: hope.
