Common Sense Summary:

The seminal work Common Sense was the first publication to candidly ask for the United States’ liberty from British rule. Written for the common man in 1776, it uses simple language to push for man’s basic right to freedom. Like Booker T. Washington’s Up from Slavery, it remains historically relevant today and is a must-read for all Americans.

This is a book about the author's views of the history of government. The author provides his views and some possible improvements in the government. There are many interesting and challenging thoughts about how our government was built and why. The author takes into account natural human behavior, which makes his views seem more apt to happen; or be true. This is an extremely logical if somewhat unpractical view. Please Note: This book is in easy to read true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. This eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable.

Common Sense -- Adobe PDF ebook. Thomas Paine's classic work of the struggle between America and Britain in the late 18th century.

Includes the complete texts of Common Sense; Rights of Man, Part the Second; The Age of Reason (part one); Four Letters on Interesting Subjects, published anonymously and just discovered to be Paine's work; and Letter to the Abbé Raynal, Paine's first examination of world events; as well as selections from The American Crises.

In 1776, America was a hotbed of enlightenment and revolution. Thomas Paine not only spurred his fellow Americans to action but soon came to symbolize the spirit of the Revolution. His elegantly persuasive pieces spoke to the hearts and minds of those fighting for freedom. He was later outlawed in Britain, jailed in France, and finally labeled an atheist upon his return to America.

This Bantam Classic edition includes an introduction by Diana Gabaldon.

"No writer has exceeded Paine in ease and familiarity of style; in perspicuity of expression, happiness of elucidation, and in simple unassuming language."
   THOMAS JEFFERSON

Perhaps the sentiments contained in the following pages, are not YET sufficiently fashionable to procure them general favour; a long habit of not thinking a thing WRONG, gives it a superficial appearance of being RIGHT, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason.

But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason.

In "Common Sense", Thomas Paine lays out his argument as to why the United States of America should, nay, MUST, declare its independence from Britain. Paine begins by distinguishing between government and society. Society, according to Paine, is everything constructive and good that people join together to accomplish. Government, on the other hand, is an institution whose sole purpose is to protect us from our own vices. Government has its origins in the evil of man and is therefore a necessary evil at best. Paine says that government's sole purpose is to protect life, liberty and property, and that a government should be judged solely on the basis of the extent to which it accomplishes this goal.

‘When my country … was set on fire about my ears, it was time to stir. It was time for every man to stir’ Published anonymously in 1776, six months before the Declaration of Independence, Paine’s Common Sense was a radical and impassioned call for America to free itself from British rule and set up an independent republican government. Savagely attacking hereditary kingship and aristocratic institutions, Paine urged a new beginning for his adopted country in which personal freedom and social equality would be upheld and economic and cultural progress encouraged. His pamphlet was the first to speak directly to a mass audience – it went through fifty-six editions within a year of publication – and its assertive and often caustic style both embodied the democratic spirit he advocated, and converted thousands of citizens to the cause of American independence. Isaac Kramnick’s introduction examines Paine’s life and work within the context of the political and social changes taking place in Europe and America in the late eighteenth century.
