The best-known and best-loved of Dickens' tales, A Christmas Carol is the story of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, who hated Christmas. That is, until one Christmas Eve, when three ghosts take him on journeys through the past, present and future. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country's done for.
