By political intrigue and some fast talking, the first interstellar ship is launched from Mars by the U.S. government just a few decades from now. The idealistic, multi-talented crew -- including two vigorous old men near seventy years old -- makes a very risky first space voyage to the nearest star system to ours, Alpha Centauri, and find themselves able, or perhaps doomed, to do the impossible -- return before they left.
