The Book of Night with Moon Summary:

Rhiow seems a typical New York City cat: pampered by her Upper East Side owners, permitted in good weather to lounge on the apartment balcony, never allowed to run free. Or so the humans think. Rhiow is much more than she appears. With her teammates Saash and Urruah, she works with human wizards, protecting the world from dark forces and helping to maintain the network of magical transport gates that connect all parts of the world.

The Book of Night with Moon is the gateway to an amazing, secret animal world. In it we learn much about cats: they have a complex language, society, and history; they can call on skills unknown to their owners; they live lives of challenge and danger that culminate, if they are lucky, in a "tenth life" that equates to the human heaven. That tenth life is the fate of one of Rhiow's team as they, plus the foundling Arhu, find themselves caught up in a danger that threatens not only the cats of the world, but humans as well.

"Intriguing with a well-worked backdrop.... Fantasy-loving ailurophiles will curl up and purr."
   KIRKUS REVIEWS

"Vivid... what is so likable is that every turn really is unforeseeable.... Duane has a winning narrative voice... a deft touch [that] keeps the action moving."
   TALEBONES MAGAZINE

In a wondrous new adventure, the bestselling author of Deep Wizardry and The Door Into Fire brings the classic tradition of Watership Down and Tailchaser's Song into the realm of contemporary fantasy-and you may never look at a cat the same way again... The cats who guard the gates. Wizards and sorcerers, some cats can cast spells and become invisible. They are the guardians of the Gates, weaving and maintaining the magic threads between realities. When an ancient evil conquers the mystic Gates beneath Grand Central Station, flooding New York with surreal horror from another dimension, four champions-an Upper East Side house pet, a neurotic tortoiseshell, a fearless alley tom, and a feral kitten are called to defend the Earth. Four small wizards must walk between worlds, cross the River of Fire, and hunt the Children of the Serpent to face ultimate battle in a war against Darkness that began untold eons before the creation of mere Man...
