Yelling Officers and confused soldiers or is that yelling Soldiers and confused Officers? This Swamp Ebook is derived from a bunch of Army cartoons, picked from the Swamp Cartoon Archives by creator Gary Clark.
Gary Clark was born in Brisbane, Australia, 1954.
He was inspired to draw as a child by watching his dad draw. When he was about 4 years old, his Dad did a great picture of aircraft and hangers which also began his interest in aircraft and aviation.
After high school, Gary's mum suggested he should attend Art School for 3 years. Gary graduated with a certificate in commercial illustration - he was never taught cartooning but he developed his skills while at Art School as he had been doing during his early primary and high school days drawing cartoons in his school notepads to amuse friends. His first cartoon was published in 1971. It featured in a very small advertisement for security screens. That same year Gary had a small booklet of cartoons published by the gliding club he belonged to. It was called Soaring Satire .
This interest in cartoons continued while he worked as a layout artist in the advertising department of Myers. In 1974. During a lunch break, Gary developed the beginnings of a cartoon strip based on his childhood memories of marshy places and wildlife. Several years went by before it was developed enough to sell.
Gary worked in advertising until breaking into full time cartooning in 1978 doing Trucktoons for a national truckin' magazine. Two comic editions of Trucktoons were successfully published.
Then in 1981, his wife of one year sold The Swamp strip to its first newspaper. Today, Swamp appears in newspapers throughout Australia, New Zealand, Finland and Scandanavia and is translated into several languages.
It is his wife, Yvonne, and son, Scott, who provide much of the support and inspiration which make Swamp what it is.
In 1985, Gary was the winner of the Australian Black and White Artist Club Inaugural Award for Best Comic Strip Artist, and since then has been nominated 15 times, winning the award 8 times. Gary has had 19 Swamp cartoon collections published here and overseas.
In 1993, Gary was chosen as one of two cartoonists to tour Queensland as part of the Queensland State Library Cartoon Workshop programme. It is planned that this will be the first of many such travelling cartoon workshops, commenced as an extension of the Brisbane workshops with which I have been involved since their inception.
In 1999, Swamp was proud to be a finalist at the Queensland Export Awards in the category of Arts/Entertainment. He is also pleased to have won the 1999 ABWAC Stanley Award for Best Comic Strip Artist.
