Set in Indiana in the 1850’s, this story is of two wealthy, deeply religious families, and their efforts to keep alive the importance of the family unit, while adapting to the pressures of the Victorian Age. The only children of the Johnson family are two handsome sons, Donald and Richard, and they are fun loving, women chasers, with their only interest in having a good time! Everything changes for the brothers, when they blissfully marry Alice and Penny. Immediately, each sister is despondent over the choices made by the brothers, and each wants the husband of the other.

The mood of the story shifts dramatically, when these newly married families leave home, in their pursuit of a brighter future, and make their way across the Oregon Trail. During this time, the older brother becomes an innocent victim of the wives' incessant plotting, and he becomes the father of the children of each sister.

The trail to Oregon brings on one disaster after another, as it extracts a terrible toll upon them and their families. At the end of their many misadventures, heartaches, and confusion, their love will triumph eternally.
