People Hunter Summary:

People Hunter is a collection of 35 accounts of search and rescue missions by best-selling author Hal Lillywhite. In addition there is one hilarious fictionalized account, based on a real event, by new author Dave Clarke.

Search and rescue teams respond to a wide variety of problems and the stories in this book cover much of that. Events described range from tragic to hilarious. They include a description of the 1986 accident on Mount Hood in which 9 people lost their lives and which resulted in the largest mountain search in U.S. History. At the other extreme are accounts of easy but often humorous missions such as the drunk passed out in the latrine.

These accounts demonstrate the frustration as well as the ecstasy rescuers face as they volunteer to help those in need. Conditions they face range from downright awful weather to pleasant conditions, even some "virtual" rescues done by telephone.

Hal has over 20 years of experience in mountain rescue so he has many memories of events over the years. He has been involved in missions that attracted the attention of much of the world, as well as the quiet ones that never make the news. Drawing on that background he presents an interesting book, one which is also useful to those willing to learn from the experience of others.

Dave Clark is new to publication but readers will find his sense of humor refreshing, reminiscent of Patrick McManus. We can hope he will continue to write.

No written material can adequately describe search and rescue volunteers, what they face and what drives them. However this book will give the reader a sense of what is involved in search and rescue, especially mountain rescue in the Pacific Northwest.
